Cupid’s Chokehold

Dress to impress your Valentine
(or yourself!)

Does anyone remember that ‘take a look at my girlfriend’ song by ‘Gym Class Heroes’? I named this blog post after Cupid’s Chokehold ‘cos Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! Awwwww…

Everyone deserves the kind of love between Michelle and Barack. But if you and your partner have less chemistry than Melania and Donald, or if you’re yet to find ‘the one’, Valentine’s Day is still a great excuse to put on a nice frock to celebrate the day of love!

I’ve got approximately 19231 dresses ‘in’ my wardrobe (some of them are admittedly lying on the floor in the middle of my bedroom forming Mt Everest…) but I’ve selected 3 types of dresses to show how you could dress to impress your Valentine or yourself this coming Valentine’s Day! (Or in general, just great date night outfits!)

1. Going on a first date or a blind date? Gift-wrap yourself up in a wrap dress!

Go ‘cute’ for first dates. You want to look fun but not too eager!

A wrap dress would be my go-to ‘cos it cinches the waist, creating a flattering silhouette without looking too hugging and overtly sexual.

Here I am, reppin’ New Zealand and dressed head-to-toe in my favourite Kiwi labels. I’m rocking a Ruby wrap dress with an uneven hemline + these awesome metallic clogs from Kathryn Wilson to elongate my short little legs.

I scored an awesome Mango envelope clutch from my hot Spanish work wife straight outta Barcelona, which goes so well with this look! Amp up the metallic accents with some dainty silver jewellery like this cute little choker chain from Luv AJ and you’ll have your date attracted to you like a magpie is to shiny things! 💖

Dress   Ruby
(Super affordable alternatives from Iconic and ASOS, or grab this one from Ruby if you want to go red-hot for Valentine’s Day!)
Shoes  |  Kathryn Wilson (On sale right now!)
Clutch  |  Mango (Not-so-similar but super cute alternative found at Iconic)
Choker  |  Luv AJ (Similar here)

2. Single and ready to mingle? Plunge yourself into the dating scene in a plunge dress!

Single ladies, you should be like Smiths Sports Shoes and go hard out! 😂 Turn heads with a daring plunge dress! The deep V neckline is enough of a statement so I would opt for a cutting that’s more tailored rather than body-hugging.

Statement earrings are trending right now - don’t be afraid to go big! Since these Bec & Bridge x Luv AJ dagger earrings are so bold, I went for a thin body chain to subtly add a little bling to the neckline without going overboard.

This is a ‘look-at-me’ outfit so lift the attention-seeking game even higher with a pair of metallic lace-up heels like these ones from Silent D. I’d suggest rose gold ‘cos it works very well with pink hues. (And I’ve worn my silver Kathryn Wilson shoes too many times lol…)

So here I am, sticking out like a sore thumb outside Auckland Museum dressed like I’m ready for a big night in Ponsonby… 😅😅😅

3. 5+ years deep and need to reignite that spark? Look fit and flirty in a fit and flare dress!

First of all, congratulations and well done! 👍🏻 You and bae are #goals.

You’ve arrived at the stage of a relationship where you could openly let out little farts in the car and your partner will continue to live life as if nothing has happened.

It’s so awesome to find someone you’re totally comfortable with but we should get out of our stained t-shirt and track pants at least once a year to make a bit of an effort!

Cop yourself a cute fit and flare dress for this look. It has a timeless silhouette - girls started rocking swing dresses in the 60’s but we’re STILL wearing this cutting today! It’s flattering and flirtatious - so versatile that you could dress it up for a dinner date or dress it down for a picnic in the park.

I love this dress from Keepsake The Label (and all their other stuff tbh…) Footwear note: if you haven’t got a pair of skinny strappy heels - get them now! Rihanna has about 10000 pairs ‘cos they pretty much go with anything! Hers are from Manolo Blahnik but I found some alternatives for us normal humans down below!

Accessorise with a dainty cross body purse with a bit of a retro vibe to complete this “oh-you-look-so-put-together-but-really-I-spent-8-seconds-on-the-outfit” look!

Oops I forgot the most important style guide - wearing the most jaw-dropping dress doesn’t complete your Valentine’s Day look unless you also wear your heart on your sleeve and a smile on your face! ❤️❤️❤️

Whatever your relationship status is, I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day! Charm your crush’s pants off, literally! (Oh dear… 😂😂😂) xx
